What I’ve been writing: February 2024

This is the beginning of a semi-regular series sharing recent projects and bylines. I’ll be publishing these posts whenever I have a small crop of new published works to share.

Alpine House Made with Beetle Kill Pine (Dwell)

My first byline for dwell.com, this assignment was dropped in my lap (love when that happens). I wrote about a tandem A-frame house in Steamboat Springs, majority built with beetle kill pine from a nearby forest. Read.

The Making of a Mock Avalanche Rescue (5280)

One of my goals for 2024 is to write more experiential stories (as opposed to explainers or reports). This idea fit the bill. I pitched it to an editor I’ve worked with before after one of my search and rescue contacts informed me of the upcoming mock rescue. Search and rescue is one of my favorite subjects to write about — the people are wonderful and the work they do is beyond important. Read.

Pippi Longstocking is the strongwoman we didn’t know we needed (Women’s Barbell Club)

I started this piece right after Thanksgiving and worked on it in fits and spurts over the next month or so. Once I finished reading Pippi creator Astrid Lindgren’s biography in January, I was able to narrow down my ideas and write what I hope is a coherent piece that others connect with. Read.

What’s next? You tell me! I’m always open to ideas of stories to pursue. Send me tips here.
